I was watching Rosie Pope's hit reality show 'Pregnant In Heels' years before I was even pregnant. I was captivated by her approach to the eccentric, dramatic and sometimes aloof mothers-to-be and their over the top scenarios as expecting mothers. She always found a way to bring the focus back on the safety and health of the baby, while instilling peace and confidence to the mom-to-be.

Now with three littles of her own Rosie has managed to build a baby brand empire and keep things real at home.

Q&a with rosie pope
'Mother of all mothers'

"Our company motto is “Love With Confidence” and that really embodies from where I find my calm!" – Rosie

q: Where were you and what were you doing when you decided to go into maternity wear and open your own shop?

A: It was 2007, I had just got married and we really wanted to start our family.  At the same time, I needed to work in order help support a growing family and so found myself incredibly interested in making a personal passion, a professional one too, and run my own business in the pregnancy and parenting space.  At the time there was a huge white space in good maternity apparel and in brands providing great content that inspire confidence rather than anxiety among new parents and so I decided to pair the two, the product with the advice to create a lifestyle brand for moms.

Q: You have such a reassuring and calming confidence when responding to questions about` pregnancy, birth and babies. Where does that come from?

A: Complete panic!  Believe it or not, I’m such an anxious person and was so nervous about becoming a parent and being the very best I could be for my kids that I decided to empower myself with as much knowledge as possible so that I could feel confident in my choices and help others do the same.  Our company motto is “Love With Confidence” and that really embodies from where I find my calm!

q: What do you wish you would have known about being pregnant the first time?

A: The first time you are pregnant, you have nobody to take care of other than yourself. I wish I knew what a relaxing and blissful time that could have been with Sunday naps!  Once you have had your baby, your next pregnancy wont be anywhere near as relaxing because you’ll be running after your little one.  I also wish I could tell my then pregnant self that the two weeks post delivery are not easy, but things will get better, they really will and some how the cloud lifts around day 14.  I know I could have used that calming voice back then!

q: What are the essential wardrobe items for the mom-to-be in 2017?

Karlie Sprawling Denim Short - $128

q: What special splurge items do you see moms-to-be shopping for in your shops?

Q: We ADORE your whimsical baby footwear line – the bottoms are almost as darling as the tops! What made you think to design the soles of the shoes?

A: Your baby isn’t doing a whole lot of walking in the first 12 months but flexible footwear can be important when you are outside, daycare or simply to make your smile.  As they are going to be sitting or crawling most of the time, the bottoms of the shoes are as important as the tops and so I wanted to make sure we designed into the soles as much as we did the uppers.  Plus I love any little extra touch that makes you smile.

q: What's your own personal kid’s design style?

A: All 4 of my kids have a really different and distinct sense of style.  It is so lovely to watch it grow and develop…lets put it this way, they wont wear the clothes mama tries to put them in!

q: Who are your go to home furnishing or décor brands when looking for pieces for kids spaces?

A: Duc Duc, Land of Nod, Chasing Paper, RH Baby + Child, Emily+Meritt collection at Pottery Barn.

q: What do you wish you would have know about when planning your nursery?

A: That your baby is only a baby for a very short period of time and before you know it they will be pulling themselves up, crawling and then walking and so the nursery very quickly becomes a play room or a toddlers room.  I wish I had designed into that notion for my first nursery making sure that the furniture pieces were transitional and also the décor so that I could easily update it as my baby grew.  Also, any rocking chair or nursing chair you choose, must have a head rest or side wings because like it or not, you are going to fall asleep in that chair and it simply sucks not to have something to rest your head on!

q: As a mom who is working and raising children - how do you find peace with the quality time you spend on each aspect of your life, work and personal?

A: It’s neither easy nor new advice, but being in each moment is the only way to make it work.  If you are constantly thinking about your kids at work and then work when you are with your kids, no amount of time with either will ever feel like enough or really quality.  Being in each moment will allow you to find peace juggling each aspect of your life…oh and green tea lattes from Starbucks with an extra shot of Matcha help!

q: What's next for Rosie Pope? (any news, up coming launches, partnerships, personal growth events coming up in 2016)

A: We just launched Rosie Pope Diaper Bags and Accessories at our own stores, rosiepope.com, Nordstrom and buybuy Baby.  They were a real labor of love to be able to provide something I felt was missing from the space in the way of fashion and function for today’s parent.
