Q&A with Paynes Gray co-founder Chelsea MArks
A fresh Way to Shop Your Style
Q. Where were you and what were you doing when you decided to start Paynes Gray?
A. My business partner and I both worked at another online retailer for 10 years. In early 2018 they filed Chapter 7 Bankruptcy and we lost our jobs. The idea of starting our own company came up and we just ran with it. I think we both liked what we were doing and the idea of having something that was our own felt really exciting. Between the two of us, we had so much experience and had a ton of relationships within the industry that it really developed quickly. I won’t say it was easy because it’s been A LOT of hard work but the process of opening Paynes Gray has been rather smooth and felt like it was meant to be.
Q. How would you describe the shopping experience with Paynes Gray?
A. Paynes Gray is a curated site tailored towards more transitional, modern and on trend styles. We strive to keep the feel of the site simple and straight forward while still offering helpful features like filters on category pages and an option to chat if you have questions. We want shopping our site to feel easy while still offering you as much info and customer service access as possible
Q. We love the “Shop by Style” category, have you found this to be a strong benefit to your shoppers?
A. Our “Shop by Style” categories were one of the first things to go up on Paynes Gray. We knew it would enhance our customers shopping experience. I think it provides a great starting point for shoppers that aren’t confident with their own style or aren’t sure what their style is. It’s also been a great way to showcase what design aesthetic we are all about as a brand.
Q. Why did you make the decision to offer Free Shipping, always?
A. I can say as a consumer shipping has the power to make or break whether I purchase something or not. When we started Paynes Gray we knew we didn’t want shipping to be an obstacle we had to constantly be tackling so we simply went with free shipping store-wide. It keeps it simple for us and is a great perk for our customers.
Q. Speaking of style what product styles are highly sought after right now? What’s coming?
A. The Bohemian trend is still going strong. As well as Scandinavian influence in Minimalist and Hygge trends. Other than that I would say we’re seeing more “Abstract” designs in textiles and décor. Lots of geometric patterns and finishes like Terrazzo. I can see that becoming more mainstream soon.
Q. What tips do you have for a busy mom who is looking to makeover an entire room?
A. I think the main thing is to work from big to small. Start with the furniture and get that worked out because those are pieces your likely to have for a decade or more. You don’t want your love of a trendy rug to persuade you to purchase a matching bed that you’ll end up hating 9 months later. Once you get your furniture figured out than you can play around with your rugs, wall décor and pillows. I think the ultimate tip would be to hire a Designer like YouthfulNest.
Q. What are some pieces that are trending right now that would work well in a nursery or kid’s room?
A. I think more and more we’re bringing our own style into our children’s rooms rather than decorating with “kid’s products” or in kids colors like pastels. Wall hangings are popular right now as more of a “millennial trend” but they fit perfectly in children’s spaces. They add a soft touch and there are so many out there in a variety of colors that you’re bound to find one that matches your space perfectly. Baskets are another fun thing that can add great character as well as function to children’s areas. It doesn’t have to be a basket specifically made for children’s rooms… Try adding metal or wicker baskets.
Q. What's your own kid’s décor style? What favorite pieces do you have peppered in their room?
A. I have 4 year old boy/girl twins and an 11 year old son. My 11 year old recently re-arranged his room and put up a few sport posters. It’s been nice to see him take ownership of his space as he gets older. Even though he just tacked a baseball poster crooked on the wall next to his bed I like that he took the time to do it and he feels excited about it. My favorite piece in my twins room is a rug I got at Ikea. I found it when I was pregnant with them and it was perfectly gender neutral but was a flatweave wool rug so it wasn’t soft enough to use as a rug in a nursery. I ended up hanging it on the wall instead and it’s been the perfect centerpiece of their nursery and now their “big kid” room.
Q. Do you have a social media style crush and/or favorite blog?
A. I really enjoy following Alex Evjen on Instagram, she has a blog as well. She shares a great mix of motherhood, personal style, home décor + gets really personal with her own struggles as well. I always find her posts really authentic and enjoyable to read.
Q. What's next for Paynes Gray?
A. We’re also about to add 4 great new designer brands so sign up to our newsletter to find out about our new arrivals! Wink, wink.
