If you want to find something FABULOUS for that nursery or child's bedroom, than click over to the LuLu & Georgia site. You'll probably be like "WHOA!" I love this rug for my bedroom or "HEY NOW" this lamp would dazzle in our dining room – that's kinda why shopping this site is so fabulous.
The product selection is not focused on babies or kids, in fact if you read the MEET LULU & GEORGIA section you will find that they cater too a savvy and sophisticated audience. As we have mentioned before we don't just shop kids styles when pulling together a youthful space – we look for styles from all over the internet and find piece of quality that transition and grow with a child rather than staying stuck in a "babyish" design.
I think the rugs are the real stars on this site, and after reading through our interview with CEO and founder Sara Sugarman Brenner, you'll understand why.
Q&A : Sara Sugarman Brenner
The story of glam meets girl, meets baby girl
Q : What was going in your life when you decided to take the plunge into your own online retail company?
A : I started working for my family business in 2009. For 60 years, my family has owned Decorative Carpets, which caters to the hospitality and designer market. My friends started asking me about rugs for their own homes, but the rugs we carried were too expensive and custom. I would frequently attend international rug shows, taking note of the price points and constructions available. It occurred to me that I could design quality rugs at accessible prices for my peers.
Q : What is the biggest strength you bring to your company?
A : I am extremely passionate about home décor for the way products are constructed, and ultimately what they mean to the customer. They represent a person’s life - all of the experiences they’ve had and the things that they love.
Q : Now that you are newly married and recently became a mom do you see a change in product offerings for LuLu & Georgia? Change in target audience?
A : Interestingly, I think we’ve always catered to the new mom market, even though we’ve never had any nursery products on the site. The concept of the “adult nursery” has really taken off recently. People want items for their baby’s room that they can transition into playrooms, teenage rooms and even other spaces in the home. Our collection of products is representative of this, they will live on in your home for years, even after your child is no longer a baby.
Q : How would you describe your own personal style?
A : I would say my style is modern glam. I like clean, straight lines and love black and white hues, but I also like to sprinkle in some gold.
Q : We have seen the gorgeous and ultra feminine, floral nursery for your daughter designed by the über talented Emily Henderson. How did you describe to her how YOU wanted to feel when you were in that space?
When I found out I was having a girl, I knew I wanted to go all-out on the feminine front. Flowers, pink, gold, I am such a girly girl myself, so it was exciting thinking about this whimsical wonderland I wanted to create. However, being in the décor world, I also wanted it to feel sophisticated. The wallpaper was custom painted before it was printed, the glider has a copper base, the rug is hand-knotted – so it’s girly and says “baby,” but it’s also luxe.
Q : You have your own great style and access to fabulous fixtures, furnishings and decor, what prompted you to hire a designer rather than put the room together on your own?
The hardest person to design for is myself. I can put together photo shoots or spaces for others but when it comes to my own home, it’s choice overload! Plus, I am not an expert when it comes to scale. And it’s always informative to get another perspective.
Q : Do you have any inspirational images (room shots, products or locations), you shared with her for inspiration?
A : Yes, I definitely shared a lot of oversized floral wallpapers, because that was going to be the main focus of the room.
Q : Where did you splurge and where did you save on your nursery design?
A : We splurged on the rug and the glider. Coming from the rug business, I really wanted a durable yet soft wool rug for her. Wool is the most naturally cleaning and safest fibers, so that was important to me. And the glider with the copper base- come on- I couldn’t resist.
Q : A nursery is a unique space and needs to be highly functional space both day and night, what did your designer bring to the table that you had not thought about regarding how you layout and use the space with your little one?
Emily had this great idea for a custom built-in bench and it’s my favorite part of the nursery. It’s a little reading nook she created and it’s perfect. It has built-in storage too, which is such a functional feature. She also picked out this yellow/gold velvet fabric for the bench cushion and curtains. I never would have picked that color and it’s so perfect in the space.
Q : It is quite a transformation from home office to nursery. What was the most amazing surprise about the Before & After of this space?
A : Our office was pretty dark, it was painted grey, and the desks took up a huge part of the room so it felt smaller. It feels so much lighter, brighter and open as a nursery.
Q : Who is your lifestyle brand crush?
A self-starter in pursuit of all things smart, savvy and stylish.
