What's your child's nickname? Amy Molk named her company after her son Theodore a.k.a. Pooka. It was her guilt of the inevitable "mom-fail" moment that encouraged her to create Pooka Box, a subscription box that encourages childhood development through play. Available for babies and kids at various ages from 0-3yrs.

How cool is it that various subscriptions are available in our Pop Up Shop thru December 3rd! Read all about Pooka Box below and then check out this great gift idea in our shop.

Q&A with Amy Molk Founder of Pooka box
Learning is fun!

Q. Where were you and what were you doing when you decided to start Pooka Box?

A. I was sitting at the pediatrician’s office for my son’s 6 month well baby visit. One of the questions on the ASQ questionnaire was, “can your child pick up a cheerio with their thumb and index finger?” I had no idea because I thought babies could choke on small things like cheerios!! I felt like such a failure…I had delayed my child’s development!

Q. What was it about child development that spurred a subscription box rather that just A straight forward retail site selling one off items?

Children develop in 3-month increments in the first few years of life, so it felt fitting to have a new box delivered every 3 months to coincide with natural development. We want kids to have the right toys at the right time. Just when you feel like you need new toys your next Pooka Box arrives.

Q. How to you find and vet products unique to each box?

A. Ah, this is the hardest part and it is also the most fun. I LOVE finding new amazing toy brands that deliver high-quality sustainable toys that promote development. Abby, our head of education, and I hit up every toy trade show but find that Toy Fair in NY is where we find the most exciting new toy companies.

q. How does the subscription service work? Do shoppers need to buy months at a time?

A. You can sign up at any time between the ages of newborn and 3 years old, soon to be 5 years old. We will be releasing our 3-5-year boxes at the first of the year. Your first box ships immediately and then you receive a new box every three months from the day you place your first order. We also sell one-time boxes that make great gifts!

Q. What’s the most popular subscription package (age)?

A. Most people sign up between 3-6 months. I know for me, that was when I really felt lost on how to play with Teddy in a meaningful way. We answer that question by providing the perfect toys and detailed learning material that outlines how to play with your child at each specific age.

Q. Where can moms and gifters purchases their Pooka Box subscription? Can they be added to a baby registry?

A. You will find everything you need, including adding Pooka Box to your registry at pookabox.com.

Q. What are some pieces that are trending right now that would work well in a nursery or kid’s room?

A. Anything from Moulin Rotty looks amazing. Here is one of their puzzles we carry:

Everyone is obsessed with the Plan Toys Balancing Cactus. It is a family favorite and its sleek modern design looks great out in your living room.

We are introducing a few products from Green Tones in our new line of boxes. This mama bear drum is beautiful, and the sound is actually very nice even when your 2 ½ is banging as hard as he possibly can.

Q. Who are your favorite go-to home furnishing or décor brands for kids?

A. I love to mix vintage with modern design. Teddy’s room is a mix or Pottery Barn Kids, Restoration Hardware baby and a vintage rug and dresser.

Q. Do you have a social media style crush and/or favorite blog?

A. I love everything Miles Redd.

Q. What's next for Pooka Baox?

A. We are introducing our new line of boxes November 1 and I am so excited. The toys are amazing and our “thing outside the box” activities are some of the best. Abby comes up with things I could never dream of and Teddy and I have a blast testing them. We are also releasing our pre-school line in early 2019.
