Princesses, animals, outer space oh my! Kids’ rooms are a great place to express your child’s little personality and get really creative. But just like adults, your child wants a bedroom that they can retreat to. One that is functional, but fun and inspiring. Here are some things to keep in mind when designing for your child’s bedroom.
tips for kids' bedroom and design ideas

1. starting point

I typically pick one item that is my inspiration for the room and go around that. Whether that be wallpaper, bedding, a rug or a cute piece of art you just had to have. Start with that one piece that you know you can’t live without and go from there.

2. longevity

Will this inspiration be able to grow with my child or be easily updated over time? This matters most for big ticket items such as furniture, wallpaper, area rugs, etc.  Maybe it’s selecting more mature big ticket items that can stay in the room over the years. Consider purchasing a tall boy dresser for a toddler’s room and utilizing only the reachable lower draws until they are older and can reach the top ones. A crib that also turns into a toddler bed or skipping the twin sized bed altogether and going straight to a full or queen. When choosing wallpaper stick to something that works for a 6-year-old or 16-year-old. Florals, stripes simple colors and patters are safe bets.

3. budget

Are you doing an entire room makeover or maybe it’s a new baby and you’re starting with a blank slate. Consider investing more in pieces that will remain in the room through the years like the dresser, bed frame or lighting. Spending less on décor items like throw pillows, artwork and window treatments that can easily be switched out. Look for sales and free shipping. Some of the best times to buy are during holidays. Also, when shopping in store look for floor sample sale deals. If you’re upgrading to a “big” girl or boy room and just need a few new pieces there are inexpensive ways to make tiny changes that can transform the total look of the room. Some quick swaps that don’t cost a lot of money but make a big impact are paint, bedding and wall art.

4. color scheme

Don’t be afraid of color! There are no rules when designing a child’s room. It’s so fun to mix colors and patterns to create something special for your little princess or superhero. Even painting one bold wall can add a big impact if you’re unsure of committing to color all over. Wallpaper is another creative way to add color and whimsy into their rooms. Still fearful of the commitment to traditional wallpaper? Select from the numerous temporary wall coverings and decals. If bold color is not your thing, you can go neutral on the walls and add pops of color elsewhere with décor pieces and bedding.

5. color

Most kiddos have a passion for something. Whether it be ballerinas, dogs, the color pink or baseball. It’s fun to work your child’s favorite things into their room and it doesn’t need to be literal. It can be as simple as pulling in shapes, colors and textures from their favorite toy or activity. While throwing up some actual character artwork on the wall or plush toys on the bed are winners with kids and quick switches down the road for parents. Keep these budget friendly. Because we all know they change their minds as frequently as their shoe size.

But most importantly have fun! Childhood is such a special, magical time and before you know it, your children will be grown and out of the house. Enjoy decorating their special place and let them have some say. After all it is their room.

I love that you mentioned getting to have fun. Looking for fun ways to decorate your child's room is a good idea. My sister has been looking for family wall art to make this possible and might like the tip.

I like that you mentioned that taking inspiration from one item and going around that is a good rule to follow. I have been wanting to set up my son's nursery and really love the cute dinosaur nursery idea. I'll have to keep these tips from your article in mind to make the room really nice to be in.
