Lisa Janvrin’s life and design career haven’t followed the “straight and narrow” path, but that wouldn’t be any fun, would it? If her life and career were a fabric print it be an irregular zig-zag pattern, something beautiful and unique and eye-catching.
Lisa’s Brooklyn-born parents relocated from the East Coast to Iowa, then back to the East Coast and back again to Iowa - where she attended 3rd grade through high school. “Being the only dark haired Italian kid in school automatically made me unique. I took advantage of that and always came back from back-to-school shopping in New York with the latest fashion trends. This got me a reputation, one met with both skepticism and envy. Usually, the look hit the Midwest a couple years later - I always reveled in being ahead of the curve.”
Lisa’s love of all things art and design landed her back east at Syracuse University. In college she spent time in Florence, Italy and traveled through Greece, Spain, Hungary, Prague, and France – officially stricken with the travel bug. At the end, she graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Art with a major in Advertising Design and three minors in Photography, Metalsmithing and Italian Language.
Her 20-year (plus) career in design started out in New York City. In three years she thrived as a graphic designer turned art director in a top advertising agency, but she was soon restless and when her Hoboken roommate moved out she left her “safe” advertising job and moved back to Florence, Italy. Eventually she bought a home in the Tuscan countryside and lived there for a few years. “I don’t believe dreams should just live in our heads - living them is so much better.”
Lisa’s worldly travels are treasured memories and continue to inform her design today. The unique visual expression of culture in cities like New York, Milan, Istanbul, Paris, and Moscow fuel her eclectic style. Inspired by how each city featured antiquity and modernism side by side, Lisa developed her unique ability for blending vintage, retro, classic, and trendy.
At age 35, she found herself back in Midwest. Lisa moved to Omaha, Nebraska - this time for love and eventually marriage – and worked as a freelance stylist. For online retail giant Hayneedle.com, Lisa created room inspiration and photoshoots for a vast selection of home furnishings and décor products. This experience, the birth of her son, and a late night conversation with old friends about doing what you love spurred another career zag – YouthfulNest.
Ultimately, Lisa’s goal with YouthfulNest is to again be ahead of the curve, offering a flexible room design process that is self-inspired, accessible, affordable, flexible, and rewarding for both the client and designer.
P.S. Since the birth of her son in 2013, Lisa hasn’t stopped craving the need for inspiration through travel. By the age of one he racked up a half a dozen flights and his own passport that took him to Italy.
